driving instructor training process

The first step we recommend when considering a career as a professional driving instructor is to have an initial consultation with our driving school at no-obligation. You can meet some of our driving instructors in Sheffield and we can discuss your requirements and any goals you may have in detail with us.

To become an approved driving instructor you will need to successfully complete 3 driving instructors examinations which are the:

  • Multiple choice theory questions & hazard perception test

The multiple choice theory test contains 100 random questions relating to various areas of driving theory and driving instruction. These questions are divided into 4 bands. Using a touchscreen computer you will have 90 minutes to complete these questions.

    • Band 1 - Road Procedure
    • Band 2 - Traffic Signs & Signals, Car Control, Pedestrians, Mechanical Knowledge
    • Band 3 - Driving Test, Disabilities, Law
    • Band 4 - Publications, Instructional Technique

To pass this section you will need to score 80% or more in each of the bands as well as an overall score of 85% or above.

  • Driving ability test

The test of driving ability section requires you to demonstrate driving to a very high, safe standard on a wide range of different roads and driving conditions. The driving ability test will contain the following:

    • Eyesight check at a minimum distance of 27.5 metres where you will be reading a standard UK vehicle number plate with the use of glasses or contact lenses if you where them.
    • 5 questions on car safety maintenance checks which a driver should carry out on a regular basis.
    • Main driving section which will contain an emergency stop exercise, turn in the road, reverse to the left & right and a parallel park or reverse into a parking bay.

You will have 3 attempts at this section of the test.

  • Driving Instructors test of instructional ability

The test of instructional ability section requires you to demonstrate your teaching skills to a learner driver. A DSA supervising driving examiner will roleplay 2 pupil senarios in 2 30 minute phases.

    • In the first phase you will be asked to teach a pupil at the partly trained or beginners stage of driving
    • In the second phase you will be teaching a pupil who is well trained and near to driving test standard.

You will need to gain a grade 4 or above in both phases of this test with a grade 6 being the highest to become an approved driving instructor (ADI).

You will be given 3 attempts of this test should you need them.

It is important that you recieve good quality driving training from the very start. Our Sheffield driving school provides first class training covering all the DSA driving lessons syllabus in detail.
